EXTRACTIONS
Dental Extractions are procedures where one or more teeth are removed from the mouth by a dentist or oral surgeon. This includes teeth and their roots. Extractions are often done when a tooth is damaged beyond repair, is causing pain, is infected, or crowds the mouth.
HOW IS AN EXTRACTION DONE?
- Local anesthetic is applied
- The decayed or damaged tooth material is removed
- The tooth is either extracted using a SIMPLE extraction or a SURGICAL extraction
- Post extraction care is given to the patient
- Gauze is given, pain killers if necessary

SIMPLE EXTRACTION
A simple extraction is done on a visible tooth, and local anesthetic is applied. Dentist uses forceps to loosen and remove the tooth.
SURGICAL EXTRACTION
A surgical extraction is required for impacted or broken teeth. It involves incision in the gum, and sometimes bone or tooth fragments need to be removed. The surgical extraction may require stitches.

- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Inform Dr. John if allergic to anesthetic
- Inform Dr. John about any and all medication being taken
- Discuss any/all questions with Dr. John
- Local anesthetic is applied
- The decayed or damaged tooth material is removed
- The tooth is either extracted using a simple or surgical extraction
- Post extraction care is given to the patient
- Gauze is given, pain killers if necessary and any instructions
- Bite on gauze if needing to stop the bleeding
- Rest and avoid strenuous activity
- Ask Dr. John about his advised care
- Do not spit, smoke, drink through a straw or go on an airplane / high elevation
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long does it take to heal?
Most healing occurs within 7-10 days. Complete healing of the bone may take longer.
What is dry socket?
Dry socket is when a blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves, exposing bones and nerves.
Can I eat after a dental extraction?
Avoid smoking, using straws, spitting and sucking, hard foods for at least 3 days post extraction.
Will I need stitches?
Only surgical extractions or complex cases may need stitches.
Does it hurt?
You’ll feel pressure, not pain during the procedure. Some discomfort is normal and manageable through medication. Ask Dr. John if you have any questions!
When should I call Dr. John?
Dr. John tries to contact patients who have had extractions between 24-48 hours of their extraction.
Call if you experience:
Severe or worsening pain, excessive bleeding, swelling, fever or pus / signs of infection.
