A dental filling is a restorative treatment used to repair minor to moderate tooth damage caused by decay (cavities), wear, or minor fractures.
HOW IS A FILLING DONE?
- Topical anesthetic is applied, and further anesthetic if needed.
- The decayed or damaged tooth material is removed using a dental drill or SAND BLASTER
- The cavity is cleaned out / removed from the tooth
- Filling material (composite resin, amalgam, gold, or porcelain) is applied in layers
- The filling is shaped and polished to restore the natural look and function

- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Inform Dr. John if you are allergic to anesthetic
- Discuss any and all questions you have with a member of the clinical staff
- Dr. John will apply anesthetic
- The decay in the tooth will be drilled or micro blasted out
- Composite filling is used to seal up the hole
- The filling is polished, smoothed, and completed
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Avoid eating very sticky foods, or foods of extreme temperatures
- Call Dr. John in the event of discomfort

How long does a filling last for?
Composite fillings last about 5-7 years; amalgam can last longer.
Is the procedure painful?
Local anesthetic is used so it is usually painless.
Can I eat after a filling?
Yes, but to avoid biting your lips or cheeks please wait until the numbness wears off.
Will my tooth be sensitive after a filling?
Mild sensitivity is common for a few days to weeks
Can a filling fall out?
Yes, especially if chewing hard foods or due to wear; see Dr. John when this happens.
Sandblasting can be used on some fillings!
Depending on the case, Dr. John will be able to see if you are able to use a micro blaster instead of a typical filling.
